Yes, once you leave the cities/towns you can see an incredibly beautiful country. It's the cities and the towns that are the blights on the country.
In no country have I ever seen such a similarity among urban centers. A medium sized-town near Hiroshima is going to look identical to a medium-sized town in Hokkaido (the north island) and the big cities are even more alike -- massive clones of one another as if there had only been three teams of architects who had gotten together and designed Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya, Sapporo, Hiroshima and all the others, over an exceedingly long luncheon meeting.
I would not have known. In my mind Japan is one big urban arcade with tons of lights and noises and people. This is beautiful!
